There's a guy canoeing in that cloud, hey?

Karyn Ellis said she'd always wanted to write a song with the word "Canada" in it, and I agree.

Always sad to say goodbye to family, and always excited to be back in Canada!

Leaving and Working

Mom went home this morning, and Simon went home this afternoon, but not before Dad took us to show us his work and Simon got the chance to expertly bomb a few photos:

the sights

I headed in to downtown Portland twice today, once to visit Powell's City of Wonder (pdf):
Then we went home so Cousin Claire could tell me how badly I needed to watch Black Swan, and dad could show his sister his new presents:
Then it was back to East Portland with Andrew to try to find PDX's live music scene at the Doug Fir:
The headliners, Guantanamo Baywatch, played a single, shockingly unpolished set of a kind of crazed surf music so fun that I danced the whole time I was in line for drinks.

Sometimes downtown PDX is so exciting that you want to run around waving your arms going "weeeeeeoooeeeeeeooeeeeee!!!", and sometimes downtown PDX is so exciting that you want to curdle up in the end of one of Powell's Books' book alleys and rock back and forth and cry.

Winning at Christmas

Christmas may be about family, but Christmas day is about presents. That box has a hand-made robo-patterned snuggie in it, and hell yes.

It's also possible to win at Christmas. For instance, Joanna won at Christmas by making me the perfect snuggie. Baby Interrobang won by getting this home-made quilt from Lisa:
Auntie D won 'most clever' for her gift of a subtle hint for Dad:
Matthew and his family won for coming from the future:
Dad won by asking for memories for Christmas, we all won for giving them, and Toshia won for putting them together for us.
And we all won for food.

Christmas feels like a whirlwind this year. We didn't even get the tree trimmed until Christmas Eve.

Team Mommy

Portland is also home to some once-removed and second cousins, which means Christmas parties with people I haven't seen since they were 6, but who will still hug you when you see them. Which is, frankly, outstanding.
Here's Mom, showing her cousin-in-law (or, cousin-out-law?) how we had lots of hair or no hair or something as babies, and Dad grinning with his sister, putting the lie to the whole sibling rivalry we hear so much about. Below, my second cousin and her Dad listen to Joanna explain something about babies. It's a baby-themed holiday, which is also outstanding.
... because we're getting a new one. Here's Toshia helping Interrobang model her first ever Christmas gift, a "team mommy" onesie.

Christmas Shopping!

Christmas is at Dad's place this year, because it can hold all of us:
Also, because it's in Portland, which is full of outstanding:
And they have beer in the grocery store. A beer aisler. With a Micro Brew section.

Unsurprisingly good

Saturday night went until Sunday morning, and Karaoke was way better than you might have expected.

Secrets of the Unknown

Have I ever showed you this trick? You can see the infrared light on a remote control light up if you use a digital camera. These guys don't seem impressed. But we should still make IR Christmas lights that you can only see through a digital camera, yo.

I can say from first-hand experience that the only way to get down these stairs is on your ass.

First Annual Provincial Archive Christmas Party!

The Provincial Archive put on an awesome Christmas show at Teddy's, complete with a singalong:

Legacy Issues

If you get out of Tron: Legacy downtown at 3am, your city starts to look pretty damn Tron.

My friend Colleen took me out to dinner, to show me Filipino food and Filipino karaoke, which only _looks_ like it causes me terrible pain:
The food was delicious, and the karaoke was fun, and the bathroom comes with a viewing gallery:

I've never been this close to sliding down these stairs on my stomach

We are blessed and sustained by what is not said

I caught myself wishing I could push a button on my phone and make Joanna Newsom music come out. 2 or 3 times last week I saw giant white-laminate block letters the size of my head appear in the air, spelling the lyrics, words floating in one at a time as she sang them. When I was half asleep this morning I think I grabbed and hugged some of the harp parts from Have One On Me. I think I need to spend more time interacting with actual people.

Material Culture

I think I'm finally ready to start writing stories about my time in Japan, but I'm kind of stuck until I can think of a really impressive word for penis.

AMT threw a holiday-slash-wear-an-eyepatch party that was quite successful. Vince made a gingerbread colloseum, Pud made some mini-honey gladiators, and AMT made happiness for all.

Softly Snowfall

This is a cell-phone picture of how you can see the shape of the individual snowflakes lying on top.

Pud and I made pizza at his place, and AMT and Rachelle came over to hang out with us and Lo Pan and the Grinch. Outstanding good times.

I made this for you

Optimality theory is pretty flexible.

This is why he's hot: he's hot 'cause he's fly

Every time I see this poster, I almost buy a television.

They are insistent

I pay too much for these drinks, but I CAN'T HELP MYSELF THEY ARE DELICIOUS.

Nice Cans

Olivia looks pretty much hipster as fuck, but she's not really.

Why thank you. I think I'll do that.

Libraries Rock!

This is a picture of how the EPL has the closing theme from Monty Python's Flying Circus as their closing theme.

Buy a Karyn Ellis CD RIGHT NOW

Sometimes I think I could get enough exercise just by going to outrageously beautiful concerts and getting extremely woo-woo excited.

Full Disclosure

If you get invited to a friend's birthday feast the day after you meet them, you might find it easier, for some reason, to tell them that you tend to get depressed and you just might drink and surf the internet too much, but not that you, ah, don't really, um, eat, you know, meat, I mean, usually.... Anyway, it was delicious. And I got leftovers!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Kyle, Bekka and Olivia hosted a delicious Thanksgiving party! The trick to taking candid photos is to keep taking them until people forget that you're taking pictures. Until _most_ people forget, anyway.

Free Bathtub

I guess this means I'll have no squatters in my neighbourhood after all.
