Malls are Confusing Places

I can't believe I thought the biggest mall in the world would be the best place to try to calm down and get some work done.

Edmonton

Sometimes I think that if we do convince Charlotte to come to Edmonton, it won't be because of how friendly we are or because of our world-class researchers but because she got to stand and look down a tree-lined Garneau street for a few minutes.

Caught!

Antoine managed to get not just our department but the entire Graduate Students' Association to switch to using only 100% recycled paper, so it's a rare photo that catches him holding a styrofoam cup.

I missed

On the serve, even. It was the most anticlimactic match-point you could imagine. Still, squash is super fun.

Celebration of Teaching, Learning, Politicians

The Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and President of the Privy Council told me that she likes my style! Hoo yeah! After I got her friend to take this picture with my camera, her friend took one with her own camera. Rona Ambrose might be blogging me.

Land Claims

I didn't mind losing Pembertina when I realized that it meant the Faculty of Native studies would get their own space. Then I heard that when this construction is over, they're going to move Native Studies to another building and give the space to somebody else. Sheesh.

[NOTE: turns out they aren't moving, but the East Asian studies students are going to join them.]

Best Lab Ever

You know you're in a good lab when you have pizza for the meeting and it's all vegetarian. And it's 5 different types of gourmet vegetarian. And you live in beef country.

A Missed Opportunity

I was so psyched to find out that the gym was called the Van Vliet Centre because that meant I could call it the Beefheart Centre. I think they made it look like a 4-block glowing chunk of butter specifically to prevent my nickname from taking hold.

A Rare Event

I think this is the first time everyone who lives here has been in the same house, let alone the same room.

BOOM!

I was listening to the radio the other day and this guy who called in to play the name-a-rock-song game said he needed a job. Within an hour, the DJ called him back and put three people on the air offering him jobs that paid $20-$30 an hour. Then later they announced they would do it once a month. (Or was it week? It's too crazy to imagine.)

Non-stop

A work party is where all you really want to do is work because you have a sh*t tonne of it to do, but you also realize that sitting at home and working by yourself on Friday night would be totally lame.

Back to School

It felt weird wearing a tux this early in the season, but not half as weird as practicing Christmas carols in September.

I was on my way to try Buddhist meditation, but it looks like I could solve all my problems by just singing HU. Plus, soul travel.

Space

Man, I don't think I've ever had a desk this clean. But, I guess I haven't been so stressed out that I couldn't focus on anything but cleaning before.

I got this new phone with a camera in it, but on balance today was mostly about terrible loss.

There's a great Japanese movie about suicide called Maborosi (幻の光 in Japanese), but you have to watch it right to the end, even if you're bored, or you won't get it.

Now, that's more like a party: Lots of people I don't know in my house, everything is a little blurry, and nothing is standing up straight.

Man, I was so tired of fraternities, Jesus clubs, and phone companies at clubs days that I was psyched to see what I thought was a breakdancing club. But no. It was a breakdancing phone company.

School starts tomorrow. I'm definitely not ready to go back to work, but the work doesn't seem to care too much about that.
